Shape and Bake!

SCULPTING...Being able to create in 3D is hard, but it gives you a satisfaction like no other. It's a completely different ball game than painting in 2D. It's extremely fun and very educational. Creating form and shaping things to look believable and many times symmetric takes skill and lots of practice.

I have been a huge fan of stop motion animation my whole life. It started with me watching a lot of cartoons as a kid that were created in Russia in the 60s. I know very often they use clay and plasticine to sculpt the characters for animation of that kind, so I definitely needed to get more acquainted with sculpting.

Here are a few of my projects for SCULPTURE. I'm definitely picking it up as a hobby even after I get done with this class.  More to come...

My inspiration for this beast came from a series of works by a favorite artist of mine Alex Pardee. He did a few paintings of child eating monsters for his series aptly named "Letters from Digested Children".
I got so fascinated with that concept I figured I should to give it a shot and sculpt one of my own. His name is Bubbles!

This is a sketch for the next one I did. Main inspiration for "Mr Robato" came from visiting the Tim Burton Exhibition at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art). I have been a die-hard Tim Burton fan since I can remember. I've been told a few times that some of my own work kind of contains some Burtonesqe features. I take that as a compliment. It's all about who and what inspires you the most when you brainstorm. For me it's a handful of selected artists, but nontheless I keep my art true to me and my own style in the long run.
For this project I started with a different idea for the secondary character at first but eventually ended up changing it in the end. I'm pretty satisfied with the final outcome. Enjoy!
